Say – John Mayer | Must I wait for Mayer to finally release another song before I can hear good music again? “Say” was written as a single for the upcoming Rob Reiner picture “The Bucket List”, where two old men from different backgrounds come together to complete a things-to-do-before-i-die kind of list. The official music video mixes clips from the movie. I think the track seems to capture what the story is all about: saying what you need to say before it’s too late. With a return of light Mayer acoustics, that blend a catchy ukulele riff, a hint of violin backings and a Phil Collinesque ending, “Say” is a powerful life-affirming track, the likes of which I haven’t heard in a long time. It’s a good song for the winter time as well. Best listened to with headphones on. “Even if your hands are shaking/and your faith is broken/even as your eyes are closing/do it with a heart wide open”
Long December – Counting Crows | From my favorite band comes a memorably mellow song. “It’s a long December and there’s reason to believe, maybe this year will be better than the last”
My December – Linkin Park | The Reanimation version is very, very smooth. Again, it’s another moody song. “this is my December, these are my snow covered dreams”
The Crane Wife 1 & 2 and 3 – The Decemberists | If I remember right, these songs have been on my playlist before but The Decemberists have a strange way of surfacing during the winter. And rightly so. A three part song based on a Japanese fable, it’s the closest thing to hearing poetry in musical form. They are best listened to one after the other. “We were poorly/our fortunes fading hourly/and how she avowed me/she could bring it back”
Don’t Waste Your Time – Kelly Clarkson | From her latest album “My December”, Clarkson has dished out some really amazing hits with that powerful voice of hers. Don’t Waste Your Time is the most recent. “Don’t waste your song on me”
Grace – Simon Webbe | If you can get past the fact that this guy was once in a boy band called “Blue”, then you might realize, as I did, that it’s a pretty good song. May even a bit spiritual? “Reaching out, looking for some way to escape the crowd”
Nice pickings. I love Linkin Park’s “My December” especially when it says; “And I give it all away, just to have somewhere to go to, give it all away, to have someone to come home to”.
I love Mayer’s “Say”…”
Have no fear for giving in.. Have no fear for getting older… You better know that in the end its better to say too much than to never to say what you need to say again”… empowering words
This song is really inspiring :))
the first 5 songs are awesome and classic december tunes in the past few years although this december was not very long for me.
i haven’t heard Simon’s Grace..but knowing he was a former member of Blue..i may have to listen 😉
oohhh more music reviews!
Today I bought the new linkin park album. I haven’t actually unpackaged it yet because I was just a bit more excited about the other album I also picked up -the new Buckcherry, I think it’s called 15.
Counting crows? I thought the goo goo dolls were your favorite.
