Amman – Jordanian security authorities have established that a love affair between a Jordanian and an Iraqi woman prompted the man to set his lover’s house ablaze at dawn on Wednesday, killing her and two other family members, security sources said Sunday.

The man, whose identity was withheld, confessed to have committed the crime and re-enacted it before the public prosecutor of the criminal court Amjad Kurdi, who ordered the defendant be detained for 15 days pending further investigations, the source added.

The suspect, a 19-year-old owner of an internet cafe, told the authorities that a relationship developed between him and the slain Iraqi girl, Yaqine, 24, since March and that she agreed to marry him.

But recently, the defendant said, the girl’s family approved her engagement to an Iraqi man, which prompted him to torch the family’s apartment in the Gandawile neighbourhood of West Amman.

The other two people who died of smoke inhalation were an Iraqi businessman, Hadi al-Lami, 42, and his wife, 38-year-old Maysoon, Yaqine’s sister. Three other family members managed to escape, security sources said. [source]
